When you or someone you support starts exploring NDIS home and living options, two terms often appear: Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).
The main difference is straightforward: SIL funds support with daily life. SDA funds specialist housing. They address different needs, and some participants receive both.
Understanding that distinction helps you ask clearer questions before discussing a move or a new support arrangement.
What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
SIL is support for participants with high disability-related needs who require help or supervision throughout the day and night. It aims to help you live as independently as possible while building everyday skills.
Depending on your assessed needs and approved plan, support may include:
- Personal care, such as showering and dressing.
- Preparing meals and developing cooking skills.
- Cleaning, laundry and daily routines.
- Supervision and assistance overnight.
SIL is not simply another name for any help at home. If you only need a few hours of assistance each day or week, other daily living supports may be more suitable.
What is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?
SDA is housing designed for eligible participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. Its features help meet disability-related needs that ordinary housing may not adequately address.
Depending on the dwelling, features may include wheelchair-accessible spaces, wider doorways, ceiling hoists or backup power.
SDA does not include the workers who assist you at home. Support services are considered separately.
SIL vs SDA at a glance
| Question | SIL | SDA |
|---|---|---|
| What does it provide? | Assistance or supervision with daily life | Specialist housing |
| What does funding pay for? | Eligible support services | Payments to an SDA provider for an enrolled dwelling |
| Does it cover everyday living expenses? | No: rent, groceries and utilities remain separate | Participants still pay a reasonable rent contribution and everyday bills |
| Does approval automatically include the other? | No | No |
Can you receive SIL without SDA?
Yes. SIL does not require you to live in an SDA property. Support may be delivered in other housing arrangements when the NDIA approves SIL as appropriate for your needs.
For example, someone may need substantial daily and overnight assistance but not the specialist features of an SDA dwelling. Their support needs and housing needs are assessed separately.
This example illustrates the distinction; it does not establish anyone’s eligibility.
Can you receive both SIL and SDA?
Yes, if you meet the requirements for each. A participant may need specialist housing features as well as substantial assistance with daily activities.
In that situation, SDA addresses the dwelling and SIL addresses support. Being approved for one does not automatically qualify you for the other.
Does SDA cover all your rent and living costs?
No. SDA funding pays the SDA provider, but participants still contribute reasonable rent and pay ordinary expenses such as groceries and electricity.
SIL funding also excludes ordinary rent, groceries and utility bills. Before agreeing to an arrangement, ask for a written explanation separating NDIS-funded support, housing costs and your personal contributions.
What should you ask before choosing an arrangement?
Use these questions to guide a conversation with your support network or a prospective provider:
- What support do I need during the day and overnight?
- Which housing features matter for my safety and access?
- What is already approved in my NDIS plan?
- Who provides the housing, and who provides the support?
- What will I pay myself, and what can be claimed from my plan?
- How will my routines, preferences and choice of housemates be considered?
- What happens if a worker is unavailable or the arrangement needs to change?
Take time to understand the answers. You can involve someone you trust and ask for information in a format that works for you.
Where should you start?
Write down the daily tasks you need help with, your current living situation and what you would like to change. Include the help you already receive and any gaps, including overnight needs.
Speak with your my NDIS contact about home and living options and what evidence is needed. If you have a support coordinator, they can help you explore arrangements. You can also contact the NDIS on 1800 800 110.
The NDIA decides whether funding meets its criteria. A provider cannot guarantee SIL or SDA approval.
